The company (http://veilleuses-francaises.fr/?lang=en_US) that produced this box, which is full of wicks (33 plus two unattached wicks and wick holders with damage) is still in operation and has been since 1838. I am estimating that this cardboard box of French provenance is from the late 1800s.
Dimensions are 2 ⅝" across and ¾" depth.
*****Condition: Missing cork float and tweezers. There is wear, especially to the edge of the box, and discoloration to the advertisement on the lid. Also, there is an area of the box that is folded inward, as seen in the last photo. Please examine the photos closely using the zoom function and do let me know if you would like more photos as I'll be happy to oblige.
Some have identified these as "trench lights," used during WWI, but this is unfounded.
