This antique book has a publication date of 1874 by Roberts Brothers, Boston, and was printed by John Wilson and Son of Cambridge, MA.
Helen Hunt, also known as Helen Hunt Jackson and Helen Maria Fiske, was an American poet who lived from 1830-1885. She was a well known activist for American Indians and was a contemporary of Emerson and Dickinson.
Condition: The cover and spine has chipping, edgewear, and fading. Pieces of the spine are missing, as seen in the second photo.
The inner front cover has rippling of the paper covering.
In some areas of the book, the binding is loose and the pages lay flat, but in other areas, the binding appears tighter, and the book will not stay open without holding it open. Please refer to the 10th photo to see an example of the book with pages flat upon opening. Note the seam down the center.
Additionally, there is foxing, particularly on the printing and publishing page, as seen in the sixth photo, and on the last two blank pages in the back of the book.
Light penciling appears on the following pages: 14, 15, 17, 18, 20, 23, 41, 59, 61, 62, 69, 100, 118-119, and 132. I believe these marks can be erased with care without compromising the condition of the book, but I will leave this up to the new owner's decision.
Dog-earing, in varying degrees, appears on the following pages: 15-16, 55-56, 57-58, 59-60, and 81-82. Some dog ears are more pronounced and the pages are firmly creased in the corners, sometimes leaving foxing on the opposite page from years of contact with the creased corner.
A small tear appears at the top of pages 55-56 and to a much lesser degree on pages 57-70. The bottom of the last page with printed matter, page 191, has a small tear as well.
Pages have slight shaking from 122-126 at the bottom toward the spine.
Thank you for looking.
