Antique, Qing Dynasty Chinese Opera Doll

Sorry, this item has sold.

This doll is circa late Qing Dynasty (more than likely early 20th century). Known as opera dolls, merchant dolls or royal dolls, these were usually purchased as souvenirs at the Chinese opera.

Height is 7 1/2". Doll is comprised of what I believe to be a plaster or papier-mâché head and possibly wooden or papier-mâché hands. I believe the torso and legs and quite possibly the feet are wooden save for the material to create shoes that is adorning the feet.

Please note the areas of wear on the crown, sides and back of head. There are two holes in the head where perhaps ornamentation was placed. The nose is chipped as is an eyelid, and the face shows wear commensurate with age. Do ask if you need more photographs as I'll be happy to oblige. The head is removable, and rather than being a flaw, I've read that most of these dolls had removable heads.

A raised ornamental design with wear to it adorns the hair.

The clothing is richly embroidered and is quite possibly silk save for the cotton undergarments. The outer clothing does have fading and wear but appears to be in overall fine condition.

Your doll will be sent via Priority Mail and fully insured.

Thank you for looking.
