One-Ninth Plate, Hand-tinted Ambrotype of Young Girl in Elaborately Detailed Union Case

This nice example of a mid-1860s, one-ninth plate ambrotype in an elaborately detailed union case is in very good condition. The outer portion, the preserver, is finely detailed (a hallmark of post 1859 ambrotypes), and behind this is the glass that protects the ambrotype. The piece with the oval cut out is known as the mat, and beneath this is the ambrotype.

The term "union" has nothing to do with the North side during the Civil War as many believe but refers to the union or combination of different materials, which were heated and poured into molds to create these cases. This is not gutta percha, although it is often misidentified as such.

The case depicts a beehive, bees and gardening implements. The hinges are secure. The case clicks closed and opens easily.

The front portion of the case has a chip in the upper right corner on the edge, one on the upper left hand corner on the edge, and one on the bottom left hand corner on the edge. The back of the case has a chip on the lower left hand corner on the edge. These chips are not noticeable when the case is viewed straight on. If the edges are examined closely, one will be able to see these small chips. The closed case measures 3" x 2.5".

I don't believe the girl is in mourning attire based on the black trim on her sleeves, especially with the lace collar and print. This is more than likely part of the design of the dress.

Returns and exchange details
