This Russell & Erwin Co. doorknob backplate is probably brass. It measures 10 3/8" x 2 7/8" and has a slight bowing to it. The larger opening is 1 3/16" across and the smaller is 15/16" across at the widest ring on the back, 1/2" at the smallest ring on the back and 3/4" across the opening in front.
There is a bend in the metal, as seen in the fourth and fifth photos, but I do believe the backplate can be used in this condition. When placed against a flat surface, it almost sits flush.
The pattern is Roland, #520, and is Classical Revival with its simple rosettes. The R E Co USA company logo in diamonds is on the back along with the pattern name and number.
The company began in 1838 and merged with P. & F. Corbin in 1902 to form the American Hardware Corporation.
