These leather greaves are circa 1910s and the real thing- not reproductions. They have a well worn patina and are stamped with a "15" and "Howard & Foster Co. Makers; Brockton, Mass" on the inside. Howard and Foster began a partnership in shoe manufacturing in 1887.
Greaves were used as body armor to protect the lower leg in battle. They also provided protection for cavalry so they are considered equestrian items as well. Those participating in historical re-enactments may want to use greaves to add authenticity to their costume.
