"Made in Japan" was used after 1921 when US Customs required the English word rather than "Nippon." This was used until "Occupied Japan" began to be used in 1947 so I'm dating this box conservatively as being from the 1940s.
Measurements are 4 ¾" x 3 ⅛". The depth of the wood interior is approximately 1". The box is metal with what appears to be red and black paint. The schnauzer and shepherd heads are in relief as are the other metal designs/portions of the box. The bottom is marked with a rising sun and "Made in Japan." The interior of the box is lined with wood.
There is a definite patina with wear and paint loss to the box. Please examine the photos carefully and do let me know if you'd like more. I'll be happy to oblige.
