French, Art Deco, Silver-plated Mignardise (Petit Four) Serving Set

This serving set for sweets is from France and has a square maker's mark with "LH" and an unidentifiable symbol between the letters. A square mark denotes silver-plate. The gold wash is not vermeil as this would be done over silver. It may be electroplated as this process is used with base metals and not silver.

The designs of the utensil portions as well as the handles are Art Deco in nature with the shell/leaf motif and geometrical attributes, and I am conservatively dating this set as being circa 1930s.

The set is for mignardises or petit-fours and is often referred to as a "mignardise." (Pronounce this as min-yar-deez.) Each serving utensil serves a purpose. The first, a pierced spoon, is a sugar sifter or can be used to lift glazed fruits, perhaps, so that any excess syrup is not plated at the same time the confection is placed. The second is a pastry shovel used to lift small, delicate sweets such as a petit four or tart. The third is a pastry serving fork, and the fourth is a small knife used to slice and/or spread.

The pierced spoon measures just around 7" in length. The pastry shovel measures approximately 6.25". The pierced fork is approximately 6.75", and the knife is almost 7.5".

*****Condition: Please note that there is some scratching, surface wear, and plating loss to the utensils themselves (excluding the handles). Please note that this is most evident on the knife.
