This authentic (not a reproduction) token/jeton from Louis XIV's reign is dated 1677. It features the bust of the Sun King on the front of the brass token with the words Louis XIV, King of France and Navarre. The reverse reads "Trésor Royal," which means "the royal treasury." Also depicted is the Latin phrase "QVANTVM SATIS," which means "as much as is enough." The illustration is of a water reservoir with a drain, which symbolized the care with which the king and his administration tended to the nation's treasury.
Tokens such as this one were of no monetary value but were used for accounting purposes. Beginning in the 16th century, these jetons were produced and distributed to those who won the favor of the monarch and his court. Even then, they were collectibles!
