Both come from France, but are probably originally of German provenance. They are hand carved and hand-painted and known as Erzgebirge. The name comes from the region of the Ore Mountains of Saxony where most of these pieces are produced. The mining region that once flourished, producing precious metals, eventually had to turn to another source of income and prosperity around the 1700s, and that newfound source became lumber.
The dark brown cow measures 2.5" from snout to tail and approximately 2" from the tip of an ear to one of the forelegs. The sienna-colored horse measures 2.5" from snout to tail and approximately 2.5" from the tip of an ear to one of the forelegs.
*****Condition: Please note each of these animals is an antique handmade piece, circa late 1800s, so there is wear, scratches and loss of paint. Please examine all photos carefully and do let me know if you need more as I'll be happy to oblige.
