This antique, French, Acte de Désir canivet measures 4 ¼" x 2 ¾" and is circa late 1800s.
Acte de Désir means Act of Desire or Act of Longing and is a Catholic prayer, expressing a deep longing and desire to be united with Jesus in spiritual Communion.
The face of the canivet has a phrase concerning the Christian soul breaking its earthly ties and soaring towards God, and the engraving depicts this action. The reverse of the canivet has the Acte de Désir prayer (in French).
