Thank you to www.dadsfollies.com, an incredibly informative site.
This H. Walter chocolate mold was made by the Hermann Walter of Berlin, Germany. The company operated between 1866 and 1970. Based on the information from the aforementioned site, this mold is circa 1950s-1970. Note that this company is the only one to stamp the mold number on the interior of the mold. This mold's number is 656.
According to the Dad's Follies website, these molds are safe for chocolate. He writes:
Recently a customer emailed and asked – “Is my antique metal chocolate mold safe to mold chocolate in?” The answer – Yes absolutely, if it is a chocolate mold. Chocolate molds are made with stamped steel either tinned (before WWII) or nickel clad (after WWII). Both of these processes were done to protect the steel from rust and line the mold with a nonporous surface to help the chocolate release. (The Steel is similar to the material our pots and pans are made of.) I have seen many molds listed as chocolate when they are in fact ice cream molds, barley candy/clear toy, cookie molds or even cast iron cake molds.
Dimensions are 3 ⅝" x 3". There is one clip.
*****Condition: Scratches and tarnishing commensurate with age and use.
