This fifteenth century engraving on laid paper depicts Saint Matthew with book open to the human descendants of Jesus and an angel or winged man nearby. The engraving is incorrectly identified on the verso in pencil as Saint Jean l'Evangeliste with a date of c. 1466. This engraving is attributed to Master (Meister) E.S., a German engraver, goldsmith and printmaker who created during the Late Gothic period. The engraving is approximately 6 ¼" x 4 ⅛", not including the card to which it is affixed. The verso, besides the penciled writing, also bears a red mark, possibly a printer's mark or colophon. The lined characteristic of the laid paper is visible especially as the second photo.
*****Condition: Please note that this engraving has been attached (by an unknown substance) to another piece of paper at the upper right and left corners, leading to darkening of the engraving in these areas. I do not believe this was done properly and if one were to remove it, I would seek out a professional for this task. Also, please note areas of light creasing, particularly at the edges of the engraving.
Please examine the photos carefully and do let me know if you need more as I'll be happy to oblige.
