Japanese Lusterware Monkey and Hat/Hair Pin Holder/Dish

Sorry, this item has sold.

This circa 1920s-1930s Art Deco era monkey hat/hair pin holder/dish is quite unusual. In my research, I've not come across one like it. The monkey has a slot in the top of his head.

The monkey is approximately 3" from the top of his head to his base. The dish adds ½" to this. The dish is approximately 3.25" across by 2 ⅛". The depth is ½".

The bottom of the dish has a small spot of red, and I do believe there was once a Japan mark. This type of porcelain is called lusterware because of the luster it exhibits. The luster on the dish is worn on the bottom, and the monkey looks as if he had colorful accents that are, for the most part, worn off. The black pupils of his eyes also have some wear.

Thank you for looking.
