I contacted an online auction/appraisal site and received more information on this tapestry. A true appraisal cannot be given without the expert actually examining a piece in person but they were able to ascertain that the tapestry was more than likely machine embroidered in the late 1800s.

The artwork depicts a scene that took place with frequency during the years of the French Revolution- 1789-1799. The uniforms are typical of Napoleon's hussars. The other gentleman, offering a bouquet to one of the women, is probably a muscadin. They were known by this name as they wore a musk as fragrance. At a later date, they were also sometimes called les incroyables (the incredible ones), and the women depicted were merveilleuses (the marvelous ones).

Please examine the photographs carefully and do let me know if you require more photographs. The tapestry is in good condition but the border to which it is affixed has some wear.

Measurements are approximately 12" x 22".
