This vintage celluloid compact is 3 ½" across with the lid measuring 2 6/8" across. The lid snaps shut, and the powder screen is present.
Condition issues are the picture on the lid, the mirror as well as the slight depression (not readily visible but felt with the fingers) on the back of the compact. I believe this latter issue is from someone holding the compact. Finally, when the compact is held up to light, there are three spots of wear on the edge where the finish looks to have been rubbed away so that there is more of a clear look rather than the swirled butterscotch.
As aforementioned, the celluloid is a swirled butterscotch color. "Made in France" appears in the inside center below the powder screen where powder was once held.
I've seen similar compacts attributed to the French manufacturer Spingarn, but this does not have the manufacturer's name, and, of course, there were copies of popular designs.
I would estimate this compact as being from the 1920s.
