Antique Wooden Playing Card Press with Deck of S.D. Modiano Cards

Sorry, this item has sold.

This antique playing card press, according to the Bookbinder's Museum, whom I contacted for information on this, could be from around the latter part of the 18th century to the early part of the 19th century. Please note item's condition, including cracks in wood on either side of press.

An incomplete circa early 1900s 32 S.D. Modiano deck of playing cards is included. Please note the cards are beautiful but are in poor condition owing to their age, and who knows how long they spent in the press in all types of climatic conditions. There is card residue on the thin board between the two larger boards or "cheeks" of the press. Please let me know if you'd like more photographs.

On the deck of cards, the word "Schutzmarke" on the ace of hearts is German for "trademark." Also, the double headed eagle tax stamp with the 08 on the shield's center attests to the age of the cards. The color of the stamp and the value puts the cards as being from between 1920-1922. Thank you to http://www.endebrock.de/text/text-a.html for the information.

Measurements of press are approximately 3 ⅞" x 8 ¾ ".
Cards are 3 13/16" x 2 9/16".

Thank you for looking.
