Vintage Toleware Pitcher

Sorry, this item has sold.

This vintage toleware pitcher is approximately 5" in height and 3" across the mouth of the pitcher from the lip. Base is 3".

This piece could be antique, but I'm not certain so I'm dating it conservatively as being circa 1940s. Toleware as a creative pastime was most popular in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Please note wear, dings, scratches, etc. commensurate with the material and possible age of this pitcher.

The term toleware was taken from the French "tôle peinte," meaning "painted sheet metal." Also, another term used to describe this technique is "japanning." This is because toleware artists often sought to emulate the black lacquer with painted designs of Japanese pieces.
