Japanese Black Lacquer Box with Decorative Dragon

Sorry, this item has sold.

*****Condition and Age: Please note that this box is of indeterminate age, but I estimate it as being early 20th century. The lacquer has extensive wear in the form of scratches, paint loss to the designs, lacquer loss, and chipping. Please examine all of the photos carefully and do let me know if you need more as I'll be happy to oblige. Also, although the box has a lock, there is no key.

This painted, black lacquer box is from France and most probably an import to that country from Japan. It is comprised of wood and lacquer. The three-toed dragon is distinctly Japanese in style. The red coral decorations are known as sangokorai and are considered to be protective talismans. The eye symbolism could be relating to the Daruma, with the left and right eyes representing the beginning and the end of all things, respectively. Additionally, Daruma are considered to bring good luck. There are also pagodas and diamonds as well as another unknown shape/symbol.

The intricately painted dragon, in particular, has areas of raised paint to give the dragon more detail and depth. Dimensions are 7" x 6" x 2".
