French, papier-mâché box in black lacquer with floral decoupage and seal in lower left corner with the motto of Paris, in Latin: Fluctuat Nec Mergitur, which means, essentially, rocked by waves but unsinkable. This motto was added to the Parisian coat of arms by the famed Georges-Eugène Haussmann in the early 1850s. There is also a very worn price sticker adhered to the underside. The box opens with a press of the button and closes securely.

Box dates from the period of Napoleon III's reign: 1851-1870.

Dimensions: 4 ¾" x 3 ¼" x ¾".
