Santisimo Cristo del Paño Case with Embroidered Scapulars

****Condition: Please note that the case has wear to the exterior and interior metal and to the front image, the latter of which appears to be protected with perhaps clear plastic. Also, the scapular on the right, shown in photos seven and eight, is missing a portion of the border with some of the remaining border having come loose. Both scapulars have age-related discoloration to the faces and backs. This case is book-shaped and holds two embroidered scapulars, one with a central image of the Virgin and Christ Child. The front of the case depicts the image of Santisimo Cristo del Paño or Holy Christ of the Cloth.

In the 1400s, during Spain's reign of Ferdinand and Isabella, the Queen gifted the village of Moclin, where she resided for six years, with a statue of the Virgin and a canvas depicting the image on the front of this case. Christian armies actually carried this canvas and its image into battle with them, and in the 1600s, it was said that this image cured the cataracts of a sacristan. Thereafter, the image began to take on more religious significance.

The book shaped case measures 1.5" x 1.25" with the embroidered scapulars measuring ⅞" x 6/8" each. The age of this case and scapulars is estimated as being circa late 1800s, early 1900s.
