This antique, French canivet was printed by Bouasse-Lebel of Paris. Translated, the title of the prayer card reads: The titles of nobility of the faithful companions of Jesus. These are depicted on cards carried by doves surrounding the Christ Child and are fiat, charity, chastity, obedience, and poverty.
The attributes of chastity, obedience and poverty are not ends in and of themselves but are considered a means toward a perfection of charity. Fiat in Latin means "Let it be done."
****Condition**** The canivet does have wear and discoloration (foxing) commensurate with age. Also, please notice that the left side of the canivet appears less ornamental than the right. About a third of the way toward the bottom, there appears to be a notch and then the less ornamental portion. Please examine the photos carefully and let me know if you'd like more photos as I'll be happy to oblige.
Dimensions are 11.5 cm by 7 cm.
