Polychrome Plaster Intaglio under Glass of the Death and the Assumption of the Virgin Mary

Sorry, this item has sold.

This French, polychromed, plaster intaglio under glass with an ornamental border depicts the enshrouded Virgin Mary with possibly Mary Magdalene kneeling by her side. The Virgin also appears above the scene as she is assumed into Heaven. At first glance, one might think this is a Lamentation piece of the Virgin kneeling by the body of Christ, but the figure above the scene is representative of the Virgin as she is assumed into heaven after her death.

The plaster intaglio measures 2 ¾" x 2 ¼". The glass is removable.

Please note that the intaglio has damage and paint loss. This includes the painted border around the edge of the plaster. The glass has some chipping around the edges and is uneven. It does not fit securely in the metal frame. Please examine the photos carefully and let me know if you require more as I will be happy to oblige. I have not attempted to clean the glass but will leave this up to the discretion of the new owner.

This piece is circa early 1900s, and the carving contains the word deposé on the right side of the oval.

Thank you for looking.
