This French, Stanhope viewer, wood cross is *probably antique and circa late 1800s. The viewer has an intact picture of devotional images with "Souvenir of N.D. de Lourdes" and the sentiment: Priez avec ce chapelet et le ciel est a vous. Translated, this means: Pray with this rosary and heaven is yours. *There is also "M.F. 2001" on the edge of the viewing field, and while I do not believe this is a date, I am still dating this conservatively as being vintage and not antique.
The cross measures 2 ⅝" x 1". Thickness is approximately ½".
Stanhopes were invented in the 1800s and gained popularity throughout the 19th century and into the early 20th century. The last true Stanhopes were made circa 1972, but there is a modern producer of Stanhopes called Stanhope Microworks.
****Condition:
This cross was once attached to a rosary, and it has a hole by which to attach it.
The image does move within the viewer and can be righted by tapping the edge of the cross gently.
The cross also has wear in the form of scratches, chips and worn edges. Please examine the photos carefully and do let me know if you would like more photos as I will be happy to oblige.
