Antique, French, April 1st Postcard/Private Mailing Card

Sorry, this item has sold.

This antique, French postcard is pre-1907 when postcards had blank backs for the address only and were sometimes known as private mailing cards. This card does not have Private Mailing Card printed as many do, but a message is written in ink on the front. "Amitiés" translates to "friendships." A. Bretagnon is the sender's name.

The translation on the front is "As today is spring feast, allow this fish whatever you want." This probably dates back to a time when the tradition of April 1 was considered the start of the new year and not a day for fools or pranks. Please see the below post for more of an explanation.

Thank you to http://postcardparadise.blogspot.com/2010/04/poisson-davril.html#uds-search-results for the interesting post about April 1 in France and the fish connection.

****Please note the areas of wear as seen in the third photo (the fish's feather trim), the fourth photo (the blue silk ribbon, which also exhibits some discoloration), the small dark mark to the left and down a bit from "1er" in the fifth photo, discoloration to the feathers in the sixth and seventh photos, staining and a tear that goes all of the way through the card in the eighth photo, and discoloration and staining to the upper right corner of the card in the tenth photo.

*****The tear mentioned in the eighth photo is ½" and not visible on the front of the card although it does go all of the way through. It could be mended but I will leave this up to the discretion of the new owner.

Dimensions are 5 ¼ x 3 ⅞".

Thank you for looking.
