French medal of unknown metal featuring Vercingetorix, a chieftain who united the Gauls. Although his forces were defeated by Julius Caesar, he proved a formidable opponent.
The medal is circa early 1900s and measures ⅞", not including the bale. The reverse of the medal has a sword and other decorations with a slight depression, probably from the way the medal was struck on the front since Vercingetorix appears in relief. The reverse has considerable wear to the metal with what looks to be a reddish cast in several areas. There is also a reddish cast to some areas on the front of the medal. There is what appears to be some pitting to the front and reverse. Please use the zoom function to examine the photographs closely and do let me know if you would like more photos as I'll be happy to oblige.
There is an illegible maker's mark in the lower right and a blemish at the bottom of the front of the medal near Vercingetorix's neck.
